Gotcha! Haha, say the
reporters. They have become skilled at
asking questions which, no matter how one answers them, catches conservatives
in a trap. Their skill has, shall we
say, evolved. At least, the latest
stupid questions are about evolving.
Sarah Palin and Scott Walker have been targets of the gotcha
trap. Both of them have been asked, in
one form or another, whether they believe in evolution. Neither of them seemed prepared. Why should they be? The question has no bearing on how they would
preside over the nation in terms of policy.
Were I to advise them, I would try the following reply to
such a question. I would say that, after
careful observation, I have come to the conclusion that a lot of politicians
act like monkeys, and therefore there must be some kind of relationship there.
A fallback answer would be this: my spiritual beliefs are fully consistent
with the Declaration of Independence, which states that, “We hold these truths
to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by
their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of
Happiness.” I firmly believe in divine
providence. I will uphold the First
Amendment which guarantees religious freedoms. That is the full extent to
which that question has any relevance to my candidacy. Any further questions along these lines, are
a diversion from what really matters, and I will not waste time entertaining
them.
Be assured that more such questions will follow. They will be phrased in the manner of, have
you stopped beating your wife? Do you
believe in Leprechauns? (If you do not,
somebody somewhere will be sure to be offended.)
Conservative candidates cannot prepare for every conceivable
stupid question. They must carefully
consider how they will respond. While
there is no foolproof formula, there is a solid principle which is this: I won’t play that game.
